BioKnotic

Overview

BioKnotic is a living planter designed from 100% reusable and biodegradable materials. From the cotton rope holding the sculpture together, to the locally sourced and Sho Sugi Ban treated pillars, this is a product designed to leave no footprint. The moss growing will live and die and change over time and reflect the owners own natural environment. This is a parametrically designed product that can range from being one foot tall and living on your coffee table to being a 20 foot tall statue in a garden.

Inspiration

This project began through a deep dive into the traditional craft of nautical knots and framed through the lease of creating a 100% eco friendly product. After a deep dive into the history, purpose, and evolution of the craft lashings were chosen, particularly the triple sheath lashing.

Lashing two or more poles together can be very useful for both construction and repair—to give more length or to make scaffolding, ladders, or makeshift furniture. Poles can be lashed parallel to each other or at right angles. Key to making a pole lashing is the concept of the frapping turn. While the multiple wraps around two poles provide the structural strength that a lashing needs, the frapping constricts the wraps and creates the tension that holds them in place. If the poles are tied together parallel to each other as in the Sheer Lashing, the wraps must be loose enough to allow a couple of frapping turns to pass between them. - Everything Knots Book
