Laser x Leather Collection

Overview

The Geometric Leather Series is an exploration of textile materials and how they can be used in combination with digital fabrication processes. The collection is designed around the handbag with a matching wallet and tote bag in the series. All products are made from 100% veg-tanned leather and laser engraved. 

Project Description

The series was originally inspired by the concept of living hinges (the process of laser engraving or cutting patterns into pieces of wood that facilitates movement) and how the process can transform a material. The chosen pattern, the "Geometric A" is the same one used as the logo for my personal designs.

Each bag is handmade and stitched together. The first piece in the collection, the medium sized bag, took approximately 50 minutes to cut. This included the pattern as well as cutting out the form of the bag to make assembly and sewing easier. Similarly, the larger tote bag took roughly 2 hours while the individual wallets only took 3 minutes. The handles are cut and stitched together in such a way where the patterns and the stitching lines line up with the pattern along the bag to offer a seamless transition. 

Two wallets were also made in addition to the handbags, one with the untreated veg-tanned leather, and the other with an oil dye. 

I am pleased to say, since fabricating this series in November of 2017, not only have I fulfilled several orders for custom versions of these products, but I also use at least one piece from this collection everyday
