Development of an Inclusive Methodology to Standardize Product Development in the Cosmetic Industry

Abstract

The objective of this project is to develop an innovative and inclusive methodology to standardize color space definitions across the cosmetic industries product lines. Specifically, this project focuses on the wide range of complexion products currently market defined as: foundations, concealers, tinted moisturizers, and BB/CC creams.

The new color space map and resulting method are based on biological markers that comprehensively map out all variations of human skin tones. This mapping systematically assist cosmetic companies in the development of data-driven, demographically inclusive product shade ranges. It also aids in the identification of current gaps in existing product lines and spots previously unidentified market opportunities and undeserved customers.

Specific Aims

A human-centered need and financial opportunity exist to standardize the methodologies that go into creating new product lines by defining the way companies to develop the color ranges for products. The historical and current absence of any systematic product development approach creates a design opportunity. This map provides a unique methodology that will allow the cosmetic industry to truly serve its diverse and global customer base and address product quality, shade ranges, and accessibility.

This thesis relies heavily on: 1) data analysis of the current cosmetic market landscape, 2) primary research conducted through ethnographic interviews and observations, and 3) secondary and tertiary research into the fields of optical physics, dermatology, applied color theory, and computer graphics.

Having a systematic color mapping methodology pioneers a guideline for product developers not just in the cosmetic industry, but adjacent categories.
